Pool Care FAQ — Complete Pools Plus | Port Orange, FL

Question 1

How often should a pool be professionally cleaned in Florida?

Accepted Answer

In Florida's warm, humid climate, weekly professional service is strongly recommended. Heat accelerates algae growth and chemical evaporation, and heavy rain can dilute your water chemistry overnight. At Complete Pools Plus, we visit every week to vacuum, brush, skim, test water chemistry, and adjust chemicals — so your pool is always swim-ready.

Question 2

What does a CPO-certified pool technician do differently?

Accepted Answer

A Certified Pool Operator (CPO), credentialed by the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA), is trained in water chemistry, equipment operation, health codes, and safety standards. Unlike uncertified technicians who may simply dump chemicals on a schedule, a CPO reads your specific water conditions each visit and makes precise adjustments. Rob Chalker, CPO, catches imbalances — high phosphates, low stabilizer, early algae — before they become expensive problems.

Question 3

What are the ideal pool chemical levels for a Florida pool?

Accepted Answer

For a safe, balanced Florida pool: Free chlorine should be 1–3 ppm; pH between 7.4–7.6; total alkalinity 80–120 ppm; cyanuric acid (stabilizer) 30–50 ppm; calcium hardness 200–400 ppm. Florida's intense UV breaks down chlorine faster than in northern states, so stabilizer levels are especially important here. We test all of these every visit.

Question 4

Why does my pool keep turning green?

Accepted Answer

A green pool is almost always an algae bloom caused by insufficient chlorine, high phosphate levels, or both. Phosphates — introduced by rain, fertilizer runoff, and some fill water — feed algae and can overwhelm even a well-chlorinated pool. Our green-to-clean recovery process involves shocking the pool, applying a phosphate remover, brushing all surfaces, and running the filter continuously until the water clears. We then identify the root cause so it doesn't happen again.

Question 5

What are phosphates and why do they matter for my pool?

Accepted Answer

Phosphates are nutrients that algae feed on. They enter your pool through rain, lawn fertilizers, leaves, and even some pool chemicals. High phosphate levels (above 500 ppb) make it nearly impossible to keep a pool clear, even with proper chlorine levels. We test for phosphates and treat with a phosphate remover when needed — something many pool companies skip entirely.

Question 6

How do I know if my pool pump needs to be replaced?

Accepted Answer

Signs your pump may need replacement include: loud grinding or screeching noises, the pump running but not moving water, visible cracks in the housing, or the motor running hot and shutting off. A failing pump means poor circulation, which leads to algae and chemical imbalance. Rob inspects your equipment every visit and will flag issues early — often saving you from a full emergency replacement.

Question 7

What is a variable-speed pool pump and is it worth upgrading?

Accepted Answer

A variable-speed pump lets you run at lower RPMs for routine filtration and higher speeds for cleaning cycles. Compared to single-speed pumps, they typically use 50–90% less electricity. In Florida, where pools run year-round, the energy savings often pay for the upgrade within 1–2 years. Rob has overseen variable-speed pump installations for several clients and can advise on the right model for your pool size.

Question 8

What should I do with my pool before a hurricane?

Accepted Answer

Before a hurricane: do NOT drain your pool — an empty pool can pop out of the ground from hydrostatic pressure. Remove all loose items (floats, ladders, furniture) from around the pool. Shock the pool heavily with chlorine. Turn off and protect electrical equipment. After the storm, we recommend a professional cleanup: we remove debris, rebalance chemistry (storm runoff dramatically alters pH and introduces contaminants), and inspect equipment for damage.

Question 9

How long does hurricane pool cleanup take?

Accepted Answer

For most residential pools in Port Orange and surrounding areas, storm cleanup takes 1–5 days depending on debris volume and how severely the chemistry was disrupted. After Hurricane Ian, Rob was on-site daily for a full week for some clients until their pools were fully restored. We prioritize storm response for our regular service clients.

Question 10

Can you service my pool if I'm a seasonal or snowbird resident?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely — this is one of our specialties. We serve many seasonal residents and snowbirds in Port Orange, Ponce Inlet, and New Smyrna Beach who are away for months at a time. We provide weekly service, send photo updates, and handle any equipment issues while you're gone. You'll come back to a pool that's ready to swim in on day one.

Question 11

Do you service pools for vacation rental properties?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We work with vacation rental homeowners throughout the Port Orange and Daytona Beach area. Consistent, reliable pool maintenance is critical for rental properties — a green or unsafe pool means bad reviews and lost bookings. We coordinate around guest schedules to keep your pool guest-ready at all times.
